The article offers a review study of the place of terminology within the lexical system of the Russian language, based on S. G. Kazarina's paper “Normative Aspects of Terminology”. It examines the status of the term as a unit of the vocabulary, the relationship between terminological and general literary lexis, and the specific character of the normative regulation of special units. Particular attention is paid to the classification of special units according to the degree of their recommended usage presented in the paper under review, and to the system of notions describing regulating activity: ordering, unification, normalization, optimization, codification and standardization. The relevance of the review is determined by the growing role of special lexis in modern Russian, by the intensive replenishment of the vocabulary with terminological units, and by the need for a consistent conceptual framework for describing the normative dimension of terminology.
The aim of the study is to characterize terminology as a particular subsystem of Russian vocabulary, to reveal the specific nature of the terminological norm in its relation to the general literary norm, and to determine the significance of S. G. Kazarina's systematization of the normative aspects of terminology for lexicological description.
