This study examines the exegetical approach of Imam Husayn ibn Ali in interpreting the moral verses of Surah Al-Nur. It analyzes narrations and interpretations attributed to him and explores how he engaged with the Qur'anic text through the ethical principles he advocated in his life and legacy. The focus is on how Imam Husayn combined explanatory and educational interpretation to reinforce moral values in the Islamic community.
Surah Al-Nur emphasizes a clear ethical system, addressing chastity, regulation of social relations, modesty, and purification of public behavior. Imam Husayn's interpretation of these verses highlights both individual and social impacts of Qur'anic ethics. He consistently linked text to action and encouraged the practical application of moral concepts such as lowering the gaze, avoiding the spread of immorality, and respecting personal privacy.
The study shows that Imam Husayn used a clear and direct interpretive style, avoiding linguistic complexity. His moral discourse targeted the conscience of the believer. He stressed that ethical behavior is not merely a personal commitment but a foundation for collective integrity and the preservation of public values. For example, in interpreting the verse "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze", Imam Husayn emphasized that this practice is not only preventive but a gateway to spiritual purification and control of desires.
The research draws on exegetical sources and narrations from hadith and biographical literature. It concludes that Imam Husayn’s approach to interpreting moral verses combines apparent meaning with practical application, reflecting a deep awareness of the role of ethics in achieving social justice and stability.
