This study explores the impact of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq’s teachings on the interpretation of Surah Yusuf. It analyzes narrations attributed to him and examines the exegetical method he adopted in explaining the events and symbols within the surah. The research highlights Imam al-Sadiq’s contribution to developing a spiritual and ethical understanding of the Qur’anic text, moving beyond superficial reading by interpreting verses in alignment with theological and faith-based principles.
Surah Yusuf is known for its symbolic and moral depth. Imam al-Sadiq’s interpretations reflect a profound understanding of the psychological and social structures of the Qur’anic characters, especially Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him. For instance, he interpreted Yusuf’s dream of the stars as a reference to his future status among the Imams. He also viewed Yusuf’s trial in prison as symbolic of the tribulations faced by the Imams in delivering truth.
Imam al-Sadiq combined the apparent and esoteric meanings of the text without separating them. He emphasized the moral lessons in Yusuf’s story—patience, chastity, self-restraint, and resistance to temptation. He also offered an ethical interpretation of Yusuf’s relationship with his brothers, focusing on repentance and forgiveness rather than revenge.
His approach to interpreting the surah moves beyond traditional linguistic tafsir. He employed symbolic exegesis to connect the Qur’anic narrative to concepts such as Imamate, divine guidance, and the trials of believers. The narrations indicate that Imam al-Sadiq used the surah as a teaching tool to cultivate his followers and deepen their engagement with the Qur’an within the Shi‘a context of his time.
The study concludes that Imam al-Sadiq’s interpretation of Surah Yusuf presents a comprehensive vision of the Qur’an, linking its content to theology and ethics, and exerting a lasting influence on Imami exegesis.
