This research examines the legal framework for respecting religious sanctities in light of international law. It defines the concept of religious sanctities, explores the rationale and motivations for their protection, and analyzes the relationship between freedom of expression and the necessity of respecting such sanctities. It further outlines the legal boundaries that prevent the abuse of freedom of expression to insult religions or incite hatred. The study reviews key international conventions and charters that have established legal protections for religious sanctities and analyzes the international criminal liability arising from acts that infringe upon them—a matter of particular relevance given the recent rise in incidents involving the desecration of religious symbols and texts. Employing descriptive, analytical, comparative, and inductive methodologies, the research concludes that while various international provisions exist, current protection mechanisms remain inadequate in their implementation. Consequently, there is a need to develop a more effective international legal framework—one that strikes a balance between freedom of expression and respect for religious sanctities, while contributing to the promotion of international peace and security and the combating of hate speech and extremism
