Abstract

This article investigates the Qur’anic references found in the letters of Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) from Medina to Karbala and explores the mechanisms through which Qur’anic discourse was employed in shaping his reformist vision during the period preceding the tragedy of Karbala. The significance of the study lies in the fact that these letters represent important intellectual and historical documents that reflect the Qur’anic foundations of Imam al-Husayn’s movement and highlight the central role of the Holy Qur’an in guiding his political, social, and ethical positions.

The study adopts an inductive-analytical methodology by examining the reported letters of Imam al-Husayn and analyzing their contents within their Qur’anic and historical contexts. It draws upon major historical and hadith sources, including Bihār al-Anwār, Tārīkh al-Ṭabarī, and al-Irshād, while identifying both explicit and implicit Qur’anic references. Particular attention is given to themes such as enjoining good and forbidding evil (Āl ʿImrān 3:104), reform (Hūd 11:88), divine accountability (al-Kahf 18:49), and spiritual steadfastness (al-Fajr 89:27–30).

The findings demonstrate that Imam al-Husayn’s epistolary discourse was deeply rooted in a Qur’anic worldview. The Qur’an functioned not merely as a source of textual citation but as an active framework for interpreting reality, establishing religious legitimacy, promoting collective awareness, and exposing political and moral deviations within the Muslim community. Through these references, Imam al-Husayn reaffirmed the principles of justice, reform, and adherence to authentic Islamic teachings.

The study concludes that the letters of Imam al-Husayn constitute a distinguished model of applied Qur’anic discourse, illustrating how Qur’anic values and objectives were utilized to confront societal challenges and advance a comprehensive reform project grounded in the teachings of the Holy Qur’an
