The Semantic Significance and Methods of the Exclamatory Style in the Book (Sayd al-Khatir) By Ibn al-Jawzi

Abstract

This study examines the style of exclamation in the book Sayd al‑Khāṭir by Ibn al‑Jawzī, treating it as one of the grammatical styles that reflect the depth of the intellectual and sermonic experience in Sayd al‑Khāṭir. It aims to clarify the ways of expressing exclamation in the book’s texts and its semantic implications, using a descriptive‑analytical method. The results showed that Ibn al‑Jawzī used standard exclamatory forms, and even more than those, non‑standard forms such as interrogatives, vocatives, derivations from the root Ojb, and various other phrases. Exclamation in this book is not limited to its literal meaning; rather, it expands to include figurative meanings appropriate to the context, such as denial, magnification, regret, and reproach. This diversity is linked to the contemplative sermonic nature of the book, which is based on stirring emotion and moving thought. The capability of the exclamatory style to highlight intellectual and educational stances in Ibn al‑Jawzī, and to showcase the richness of grammatical and rhetorical styles in Sayd al‑Khāṭir, appears clearly. Thus, the exclamatory style, with its different forms and multiple meanings, is one of the important expressive tools in constructing the sermonic discourse in the book Sayd al‑Khāṭir.
