The poetic farmer and his impact on producing meaning in the poetry of Al-Shahini Al-Qubrusi as a model

Abstract

This research undertakes an investigation into the phenomenon of poetic purpose within the oeuvre of Al-Shahinī al-Qubrusī, aiming to elucidate the mechanisms of semantic production and meaning construction in his poetry. Al-Shahinī distinguished himself from traditional poets by his innovative approach to established poetic purposes, which he treated as empty vessels to be imbued with his personal sentiments and ideas, intrinsically linked to his psychological, social, and historical milieu. His poetry thus serves as a human document, articulating the experience of both individuals and the collective during a distinctive transitional epoch. The study adopts an analytical methodology for textual analysis, emphasizing Al-Shahinī's strategic deployment of poetic purposes such as love, praise, elegy, asceticism, and description to articulate meanings that extend beyond their superficial intent, exploring themes of nostalgia, alienation, philosophical contemplation, and the articulation of identity under complex historical and social pressures.

It is evident that poetic purpose plays a pivotal role in imbuing texts with emotional depth, thus making them more impactful on the reader. The cultural and social context is reflected in Shahini's poetry, where he engaged with contemporary issues, enriching its meaning. This research underscores the importance of studying poetic purpose to understand the deeper meanings in the Cypriot poet Shahini's work. The diversity of poetic purposes not only enriches the texts but also contributes to shaping the poet's identity and reflects his interaction with his cultural environment.
