The Impact of the Arbaeen Visit on Strengthening Family Cohesion and Enhancing Social Bonds: A Study in Iraqi Society

Abstract

The Arbaeen pilgrimage is considered one of the most prominent religious rituals in Iraq, and indeed one of the greatest religious–social phenomena in the Islamic world, due to the profound spiritual and humanitarian dimensions it embodies. This pilgrimage is distinguished by its unique character, which combines both doctrinal and social aspects. It is not limited to being a devotional practice aimed at commemorating Imam Husayn (peace be upon him); rather, it transcends this role to become a large-scale societal event in which various segments of society interact within a framework of religious, ethical, and humanitarian values. The pilgrimage contributes to strengthening human bonds and enhancing family cohesion through collective participation in rituals, enduring the hardships of the journey, and cooperating in serving pilgrims, thereby fostering a spirit of solidarity and mutual support within both the family and society.

Moreover, the Arbaeen pilgrimage plays a significant role in reinforcing concepts such as patience, altruism, discipline, and collective work—values that are directly reflected in individuals’ behavior within their families. These values enhance shared responsibility and strengthen emotional relationships among family members. The participation of families of all age groups in this occasion also leads to the formation of a shared collective memory that contributes to consolidating religious and social belonging and reinforcing cultural identity associated with Husayni values.

This research focuses on elucidating the psychological, social, and educational effects of the Arbaeen pilgrimage on individuals, with particular emphasis on its role in promoting family values and strengthening emotional unity among members of Iraqi society. Despite the large number of studies that have addressed the Arbaeen pilgrimage from doctrinal, historical, and jurisprudential perspectives, the social and psychological impact of this pilgrimage on the structure of the Iraqi family has not been sufficiently examined or analyzed. Accordingly, the research problem emerges through the following question: How has the Arbaeen pilgrimage contributed to enhancing feelings of religious and social belonging, strengthening the cohesion of the Iraqi family, and consolidating shared moral values among its members?

1. To analyze the social and psychological dimensions of the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

2. To highlight the pilgrimage’s impact on strengthening family and kinship bonds.

3. To examine the behaviors of cooperation and solidarity that emerge during the pilgrimage.

4. To explain how Arbaeen values contribute to the stability of the Iraqi family after the pilgrimage.

5. To derive educational and social lessons from the phenomenon of the Arbaeen walk.
