The Interrelated Role of Bound Morphemes in Expressing Standard Human Needs in the Poetry of Adonis

Abstract

         This study explores the bound morphemic interrelation of morphological structures in standard human needs within the poetry of Adonis. It examines how bound morphemes—such as inflectional and derivational affixes and morphemic markers of person, number, gender, tense, and definiteness—function as semantic focal points rather than isolated formal units. The study shows that these morphemes interact dynamically to form dense semantic networks that express psychological, emotional, and existential concerns, including identity, belonging, transformation, and transcendence. It concludes that overlooking the morphological dimension in earlier studies has limited interpretive depth, a gap this research addresses by treating bound morphemes as focal centers around which other morphemic relations are organized.

The research shows that the relationship of the bound morpheme related to human need is not a direct projection relationship, but rather a relationship of interpretive construction, formed through the movement of the morpheme between its grammatical position, its morphological energy, and the requirements of the poetic context, so that human need becomes a linguistic structure and not an external subject. The bound morpheme relatedness in Adonis’s poetry represents a semantic system that combines linguistic structure and existential awareness, so that the morpheme fields overlap to reveal a human experience based on the tension between belonging and belonging. And loss, and between progress and decline, in a poetic discourse that relies on linguistic economy and the depth of the morphological structure together.
