Abstract

The ruling family in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain until 1971

The Emirate of Umm Al Quwain was formed in 1775, when it was founded by Sheikh Majid bin Rashid Al Mualla as an independent emirate on the Omani coast. The Emirate of Umm Al Quwain is located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf with a length of 24 km.  Between the emirates of Sharjah to the west and Ras Al Khaimah to the east, it is 43 km southwest of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and 32 km north of the city of Sharjah. Its lands extend inland for about 32 km. The emirate consists of the coastal city of Umm Al Quwain and an inland oasis town, Falaj Al Mualla, 30 km from the coast. The Al Mualla family, which traces its origins back to the Al Ali tribe, was able to form the nucleus of rule in Umm Al Quwain in 1775. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Al Ali tribe consisted of several families, the number of whose members reached approximately 6,750 individuals distributed in the form of families over the seven coastal emirates. In the emirate of Umm Al Quwain, there were 100 families, most of whom lived in the internal Falaj Al Ali, known as (Falaj Al Mualla). In Sharjah, there were 200 families, and in Ras Al Khaimah, there were 150 families. In addition, there were 140 families living in the (Al Dara) area between the Bedouins of Al Jazirah Al Hamra and Falaj Al Ali. Several sheikhs from the Al Mualla family ruled the emirate in succession.  Al-Mualla, and we will mention them until the end of the study period. The emirate went through several political, economic and social transformations during the rule of the Al-Mualla family.
