Abstract

This study examines internal music and its stylistic resonance in the novels of Masoud Muhammad, emphasizing how it conveys meaning to the reader without relying on an explicit linguistic medium. Internal music is perceived both through the ear, as sound processed by the brain, and through the imagined emotional effect created by rhythm. The characteristics of letters and their articulation significantly shape this auditory impact, while variation in phonetic qualities—such as softness and strength, repetition, and diffusion—enhances the reader’s experience of the text.

Sentence structure also contributes to the author’s control over the narrative. Short, rapid sentences can evoke tension, urgency, and fear, whereas longer, flowing sentences allow for reflection, detailed description, or memory recall. Internal music further shapes character portrayal, revealing whether a character is calm, troubled, or aggressive through the tonal quality embedded in the language.

Moreover, internal music conveys aspects of the author’s ideas, as its rhythms and movements collectively create the overall atmosphere of the novels. It forms the core of prose rhythm—a hidden melody arising from the harmony of letters, careful word choice, and the alignment of pauses. Stylistically, this musicality extends beyond aesthetic appeal, functioning as a tool to balance narrative flow and deepen meaning. Whispered letters may reinforce melancholy, while forceful ones suggest intensity and conflict.

Ultimately, internal music bridges the writer’s consciousness and the reader’s emotions, transforming silent words into a vibrant, emotional experience. It arises from the dynamic interaction of linguistic elements, giving Masoud Muhammad’s prose its distinctive rhythm, expressive power, and lasting impact.
