Morphological Disagreement in Nouns in the Commentary on the Poem "Al-Farāʾid al-Wafiyya bi-Dhikr Mā Lam Taḥwih al-Alfiyya" by Ali al-Mansouri

Abstract

This research aims to address an important issue in morphology: the morphological disagreement regarding nouns as discussed by Ali Al-Mansouri in his book titled Sharḥ Manẓūmat al-Farāʾid al-Wafiyya. The significance of this topic lies in the value scholars have given to the concept of disagreement, as well as the central role that nouns occupy in speech—being one of its primary pillars and the first of the three categories (noun, verb, particle).

The objective of the research is to compile the views of scholars, highlight the key controversial issues addressed by Al-Mansouri, and present their stances on these matters. It also aims to trace their arguments and evidences used to validate the opinions of one school over another.

The structure of the research consists of an introduction, two main sections, and a conclusion. The introduction provides a summary explanation of disagreement, defining it linguistically and technically. The first section introduces the author and his book. The second section deals with selected controversial morphological issues.

The conclusion presents the findings of the research, including the persistent conflict between the Basrans and the Kufans, showing that both groups engaged in debate, complexity, and justification based on rare or anomalous usages. Both schools leaned toward intense morphological argumentation. The study also reveals that while both sides showed similarity in their reasoning and use of evidence, the Kufans were more expansive in their disagreements and had a stronger inclination toward adopting rare opinions.
