Russian-Saudi relations 2000-2008

Abstract

This study deals with Russian-Saudi relations during the period 2000-2008, highlighting the developments witnessed by these relations in various political, economic, and cultural fields. Russian-Saudi relations are among the important international relations that have witnessed significant developments over the decades, and have been affected by multiple factors, including religion, politics, economy, and culture. In the period between 2000 - 2008, Russian-Saudi relations witnessed important transformations. This period was characterized by attempts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including political, economic and cultural cooperation. Emphasis was placed on enhancing and diversifying trade exchange between the two countries, as well as exploiting the energy resources available in the two countries. It was also talked about exploiting the presence of about 25 million Muslims in Russia to support Arab issues in the Russian Federation, and exploiting this number to exert political pressure on decision-makers in Russia, and historically Russian-Saudi relations have witnessed periods of tension and rapprochement. Relations were affected by ideological differences between the two countries and their respective positions toward international events, such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Relations also witnessed periods of apathy and tension, but sometimes they witnessed indirect communication, from the cultural and academic side. Russian-Saudi relations witnessed an exchange of letters, theses, and scientific conferences seeking to enhance understanding and cooperation between the two countries. In conclusion, it can be said that Russian-Saudi relations have witnessed transformations. Important during the period from 2000 - 2008, and was characterized by attempts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields. As international events continue to develop, Russian-Saudi relations are likely to witness further development in the future.
