The impact of Arabic poetry in promoting the value of generosity from a social perspective

Abstract

This research addresses the impact of poetry on promoting the value of generosity in society. Generosity is an authentic social value that enjoys a high status in various cultures, especially in Arab societies. From ancient times to the modern era, Arabic poetry has played an important role in consolidating and disseminating this value. Poets have praised the generous and criticized the miserly, using powerful rhetorical images and techniques to establish and glorify the concept of generosity. Poetry contributes to shaping the image of generosity as a virtue that strengthens human relations and spreads a culture of cooperation and tolerance. Thanks to the proliferation of poems that praise and elevate generosity, it has become a social standard by which men are measured and for which individuals are respected. Thus, poetry plays an educational and instructive role, instilling in people the importance of embracing this virtue. The research confirms that poetry is not merely a literary art form, but rather an effective means of promoting moral and social values, including generosity, due to its ability to influence, persuade, and convey profound meanings.

During the Umayyad era, generosity was used to express chivalry, gallantry, and compassion for animals. During the Abbasid era, generosity became associated with generosity of money, life, and altruism. In the modern era, it has come to symbolize sacrifice and national giving, and is more closely linked to national issues and social solidarity.
