The bombing of the Coptic Church in early 2011 in Alexandria led to the outbreak of sectarian strife. These conflicts were among the most important reasons that triggered the demonstrations that became the Egyptian people’s revolution on January 25, 2011, which raised a unified slogan: “Bread, Freedom, Social Justice, Human Dignity.” Due to the heavy repression faced by the protesters, they were determined not to retreat from their revolutionary goal: “The people want the downfall of the regime” .
The popular character of the revolution was evident from the very first moments of its outbreak, as it witnessed the participation of many provinces. The masses succeeded in toppling the regime of Hosni Mubarak (1981–2011), holding free elections, and choosing a government that represented the people’s will through the ballot box.
The January 25, 2011 Revolution was a turning point in modern Egyptian history and an important milestone in public awareness, reflecting a broad recognition of the corruption of ruling systems politically, economically, and socially across successive periods that culminated in the collapse of the political regime.
The Egyptian revolution resonated in the Iraqi press, which monitored and followed its most precise details from the spark of its outbreak until the formation of the military council and the interim government, tasked with completing the stages of democratic transformation in Egypt leading to the establishment of a democratically elected civilian government.
This research aims to shed light on the terrorist operations in Egypt whose events led to the Egyptian revolution and those that followed during the outbreak and success of the revolution. It relies on Iraqi newspapers’ monitoring of these operations, their developments, and the associated causes, results, and political, constitutional, and legal treatments. The reader will recognize the importance given by the Iraqi press and its effective and continuous coverage of the events at that time.
