Symbolism of the conflict between the present and the past in the poem “Al-Garar” (Decision) by Sa’ida Al-Khater Al-Farsiyya

Abstract

There is a prominent presence of the Palestinian cause in the works of Omani poets, and among the prominent poets in Oman is the poet Saida bint Khater Al-Farsi, and this was evident in several poems, including the poem "Decision". One of the most prominent features of this poem is the conflict between the present and the past, as the poetess drew the current tragic situation in the shadow of repression and injustice on the one hand, and on the other hand, she reviews images of the glorious past, which she represented by summoning the character of Harun Al-Rashid, and she alluded to some events and cultural aspects of Islamic life and its glorious history.

One of the features of the poem is that the poetess, in the process of drawing the lived reality, often preferred silence to suggest the severity of repression and the poet's anxiety about the fate imposed on her by the current situation in the Arab and Islamic world; therefore, the poetess decided to remain silent and prefer well-being instead of taking risks and promoting what has no response from a call and invitation, as if she sees that the current Arab or Islamic generation is not ready to do what is required of it to liberate the land and restore previous glories.
