Abstract

The sciences of the Qur’an and its interpretation witnessed a remarkable development during the first three Hijri centuries, as revelation had a profound impact on shaping the nature of these sciences.

This was evident through:

The discovery of the miracle: which contributed to strengthening the status of the Qur’an in the Islamic community, and made it a rich reference for linguistic and rhetorical studies.

Early interpretation: where the Prophet and his family, peace be upon them, contributed to clarifying the meanings of the verses, which resulted in laying precise foundations for interpreting the Holy Qur’an.

Breadth of content: scholars’ eagerness to interpret the verses according to the historical and psychological context, which added a new depth to understanding.

In sum, these effects formed the cornerstone on which all Qur’anic studies were built in the following centuries.
