Abstract

This research examines the historical method in interpreting the Holy Qur’an in terms of its concept, origins, and development within exegetical scholarship, as well as its key analytical tools and methodological frameworks. It aims to highlight the significance of this approach in understanding the temporal, social, and political contexts in which Qur’anic verses were revealed, thereby enabling a deeper and more comprehensive interpretation of their meanings. The study also seeks to evaluate the strengths of the historical method, particularly its role in uncovering the intended purposes of the text and situating it within its original environment, while addressing its potential limitations, especially when historical considerations are overemphasized at the expense of the text’s inherent meanings. Furthermore, the research presents and compares the perspectives of both Sunni and Shiite exegetical traditions regarding the application of the historical method, identifying key areas of convergence and divergence. The study concludes that the historical method represents a vital interpretive tool in contemporary Qur’anic studies, provided it is applied with rigorous scholarly discipline that respects the sacred nature of the Qur’an and maintains a balance between contextual understanding and textual integrity.

The historical method is a scientific tool for understanding the Holy Quran within its temporal and social context. It does not contradict exegetical or doctrinal interpretations, but rather complements them. Research has shown that this method can reveal meanings obscured by readings divorced from context, provided it is applied with scholarly awareness and not through ideological projections. Furthermore, its application requires caution against excessive chronological interpretation or ideological manipulation, and it must be conducted within a framework that respects the sanctity of the text.
